Archibald N. Goddard came to Detroit in 1917 at the age of 45.  He founded a successful manufacturing company that made milling cutters of a radical design.  He and his wife became interested in mineral collecting in the mid 1930”s and soon began traveling to the Copper Country to procure specimens.  As you can see below, they collected the very best.  Much of his collection was donated to Cranbrook Institute of Science and Wayne State University.

His card catalog of mineral specimens has survived and gives a unique glimpse into what it was like collecting in the 30”s and 40’s in the Keweenaw.  The specimens were photographed in 1974 and the captions were recorded from the descriptions in the card catalog.
